Concept Analysis in Programming Language Research : Done Well It Is All Right

2017

Programming language research is becoming method conscious. Rigorous mathematical or empirical evaluation is often demanded, which is a good thing. However, I argue in this essay that concept analysis is a legitimate research approach in programming languages, with important limitations. It can be used to sharpen vague concepts, and to expose distinctions that have previously been overlooked, but it does not demonstrate the superiority of one language design over another. Arguments and counter-arguments are essential to successful concept analysis, and such thoughtful conversations should be published more. peerReviewed

Scholarly discussion as engineering the meanings of a European cultural heritage

2016

The vague concept of a European cultural heritage is frequently referred to – but rarely explicitly defined – in scholarly discussion. The use of the concept in academia constructs a European cultural heritage as a category in research and explicitly and implicitly produces its focuses and outlines. Thus, the use of the concept can be considered as scholarly engineering of a European cultural heritage. To be able to have a scholarly discussion about a European cultural heritage, the meanings and uses of the concept need to be clarified. This article examines the meanings and uses of the concept in recent scholarly articles published in various disciplines. In the study, the concept analysi…

Expanding the Active Inference Landscape: More Intrinsic Motivations in the Perception-Action Loop

2018

Active inference is an ambitious theory that treats perception, inference and action selection of autonomous agents under the heading of a single principle. It suggests biologically plausible explanations for many cognitive phenomena, including consciousness. In active inference, action selection is driven by an objective function that evaluates possible future actions with respect to current, inferred beliefs about the world. Active inference at its core is independent from extrinsic rewards, resulting in a high level of robustness across e.g.\ different environments or agent morphologies. In the literature, paradigms that share this independence have been summarised under the notion of in…

FCA-based knowledge representation and local generalized linear models to address relevance and diversity in diverse social images

2019

Abstract In social image retrieval, the main goal is to offer a relevant but also diverse result set of images to the user. To address relevance and diversity at the same time, we propose a multi-modal procedure. This approach deals with the diversification problem using a two-step procedure based on the application of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to organize the text content of the images, followed by a Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering (HAC) step to find the topics addressed by the images. FCA detects the latent concepts covered by the images in the result set, organizing them according to these concepts. In the second step, clustering is carried out to group together the ones with a…

A data mining approach for grouping and analyzing trajectories of care using claim data: the example of breast cancer

2013

International audience; BACKGROUND: With the increasing burden of chronic diseases, analyzing and understanding trajectories of care is essential for efficient planning and fair allocation of resources. We propose an approach based on mining claim data to support the exploration of trajectories of care. METHODS: A clustering of trajectories of care for breast cancer was performed with Formal Concept Analysis. We exported Data from the French national casemix system, covering all inpatient admissions in the country. Patients admitted for breast cancer surgery in 2009 were selected and their trajectory of care was recomposed with all hospitalizations occuring within one year after surgery. Th…

Automated Extraction of Motivic Patterns and Application to the Analysis of Debussy’s Syrinx

2009

A methodology for automated extraction of repeated patterns in discrete time series data is presented, dedicated to the discovery of musical motives in symbolic music representations. The basic principle of the approach consists in a search for closed patterns in a multi-dimensional parametric space, comprising various features related to melodic and rhythmic aspects, which can be organized into note-based and interval-based descriptions. The pattern description is further reduced through a lossless pruning of the sequence description. This requires in particular a detailed estimation of the specificity relations between patterns. For instance, a pattern is more specific than its suffix, an…

Formal Concept Analysis of Musicians' Awareness for Musical Expression

2009

This paper proposes a logical framework that visualizes musicians' conceptual structures that are acquired in skill communication processes for musical expression as rhetoric. Generally, these conceptual structures are difficult to show difference between experts and beginners. So, we first carry out a theoretical analysis of musicians' awareness for musical expression using Channel theory and Formal Concept Analysis (FCA). Then, we propose a representation that shows the level of musicians' skills of musical expression. Finally, we discussed about hierarchy of musicians' conceptual structure.

Data and Methods: A Conceptual Approach to Intercultural Dialogue

2020

In this chapter, we discuss the constructivist perspective on concepts and explain how we utilize this in our analysis of concepts used by the Council of Europe and the European Union in their education policy documents. In this perspective, political language and administrative documents not only describe the reality of administrated issues but also participate in their construction and meaning-making. The authors emphasize the performativity of language and discuss its significance for political rhetoric. Besides the theoretical and methodological frameworks, we describe the data and elaborate on the genre of education policy documents. We also provide an overview of the development, cont…

A systematic concept analysis of mental health promotion

2016

AbstractThis study explored and clarified the nature and characteristics of the concept of mental health promotion. The study also investigated how these characteristics appear in current policies and strategies. A total of 30 scientific articles and policy documents were identified and analysed using Rodgers’s systematic evolutionary concept analysis method. The analysis provided valuable information on the attributes, related concepts, antecedents, consequences and references of mental health promotion, indicating that the concept is a distinct concept comprising a unique set of attributes and characteristics. A concept mapping of mental health promotion was subsequently developed. The an…
